Storm Mailguard @ http://www.storm.ca/spam

Superaje Mailguard @ http://www.superaje.com/spam

Mail2 Mailguard @ http://mail2.storm.ca/spam>

Another great resource for information is https://home.storm.ca/spam/help.php

Mailguard is the spam filter we use at Storm. You can use this in a variety of ways and take advantage of as many or as few options as you like.

This document has been created to show how to setup basic spam settings, advanced spam settings and how to add and remove email addresses from your white and black list.

There are 2 approaches to setting up mail at storm. The first is a quick generic setup, the second is more lengthly but can be fine tuned.

1- Login

Depending on your username you need to visit the correct website to login and change your spam settings.

Storm

http://www.storm.ca/spam

Superaje

http://www.superaje.com/spam

domain.com/domain.ca

http://mail2.storm.ca/spam

compmore

http://www.storm.ca/spam

Compmore users should use the storm link. We have migrated compmore mailboxes to Storm accounts.

2- Basic Spam Settings

Once you have logged in you will see a screen that allows you to choose your current protection level.

The amount of spam you receive will determine what your protection level should be set at.

If you are unsure click on the “Medium” level as this level is usually

Then click on “Change Level” to commit your new spam settings.

You can now close your browser and let the spam filter work. If you find that you are still getting a lot of spam try changing the filter to 'High'

3- Advanced Spam Settings

Once you have logged in click on the settings link at the top of the page.

Then click on your username that is listed beside Primary Address. In the image below the username is 'doogie', when you login it will show your username here.

In this screen you can make adjustments to your settings. The image below shows some average settings. Here you can fine tune your spam controls. Below the image is a short description of each of the options on this screen.

Once you have made the setting changes click on the “Update This Address' Settings' button at the bottom of the page.

4- Mailguard Options Explained

  • Virus Scanning – This option scans your messages for known viruses.

  • Detected Viruses should be – If you turn on virus scanning Mail guard needs to know what to do with a detected virus.

Labeled

This means the virus will still be delivered to your mail box but the message will be marked that it may contain a virus.

Quarantined

This means the message will be placed in your quarantine so that you can look at the message without downloading it.

Discarded

This means that Mailguard will throwout the message and you will never see it.

  • Spam Filtering – This option enables or disables spam filtering.

  • Detected Spam Should be – This tells Mailguard what to do if it finds a spam setting.

Labeled

This means the spam will still be delivered to your mail box but the message will be marked with spam in the subject line.

Quarantined

This means the message will be placed in your quarantine so that you can look at the message without downloading it.

Discarded

This means that Mailguard will throwout the message and you will never see it.

  • Add a Prefix to the subjects of spam – The subject of the message that has been detected will have [SPAM] added. You need to have spam filtering enabled to use this feature.

Scores in Mail guard are used to sort messages. When you have enabled the spam filtering Mailguard assigns a score to each message. The higher the score the more likely it is spam. The next few options are based around the score value.

  • Add X-Spam Headers when Score is - This is the threshold score before messages will be marked with X-Spam Headers. Enabling this will show you the score that each message receives from the Mail guard System. In the above example we have set it low (0.1) so that each message is marked with its score.

  • Consider Mail Spam when score is – This option sets the cutoff score for messages to be considered spam. In the above example we have set this to 3.0; messages that get a score of greater then or equal to 3.0 will be considered spam. To make your spam settings more aggressive decrease this number; this way it will take less 'spam score' to consider the message as spam.

  • Quarantine Spam with when score is – This is the cutoff score for messages to be placed in your quarantine. The quarantine is a place to view your messages before they come to your mailbox. They are also called cache contents on main page of Mailguard.

  • Attachment Type Filtering – Enable this if you would like to have attachments filtered on your incoming mail.

  • Mail with dangerous attachments should be – This tells Mailguard what to do with dangerous attachments. You need to enable Attachment Type Filtering to use this option.

Labeled

This means the mail with dangerous attachments will be delivered to your mail box but the message will be marked with be marked that they may have a a dangerous attachment.

Quarantined

This means the message will be placed in your quarantine so that you can look at the message without downloading it.

Discarded

This means that Mailguard will throwout the message and you will never see it.

  • Bad header filtering – When enabled this will look in the headers of your messages and see if they are formatted properly. Headers contain all the history of the message; where it came from what its message Id is, and what has happened to the message. Sometimes spammers change the information in the headers this option allows you to manage the messages that have bad headers.

Labeled

This means the mail with bad headers will be delivered to your mail box but the message will be marked with be marked that they may have a bad header.

Quarantined

This means the message will be placed in your quarantine so that you can look at the message without downloading it.

Discarded

This means that Mailguard will throwout the message and you will never see it.

Click on [W/B List]

Type the email address in that you want to add to the white or black list.

Click 'Add to List' to add the email.

Once the email is added your screen will change and you will be able to move it the black list or remove it by clicking on the corresponding dot.

6- Adding a Wild Card to your White and Black list
