What is involved in the site survey for wireless internet, and why is it necessary?

Before setting up wireless internet, a site survey costing $49.95 + HST is required to determine if our service can be effectively provided at your location. This survey assesses signal strength and physical obstructions that might affect service quality. The cost of the survey will be credited towards your installation if you proceed within one year. However, please note that the survey fee is non-refundable.

How long does it take to get installed on wireless internet?

Our wireless service is typically installed within 5 business days once a site survey has been completed and you have accepted our quote for the installation costs. Site surveys can take up to a week before we come visit you, depending on our mutual schedules. If we think you may have a good chance of getting service, we will try our best to perform what we call a test install, which is an installation at the same time there is a site survey with positive results.

What if I move to another location? Can I keep my wireless services active?

If you move your service location, we will need to visit the new location to conduct a site survey at a cost of $49.95+HST. If you decide to go forward with the move, our standard installation cost for a move of service is $100 off the standard installation cost of $249.95 +HST.

What are the installation costs for wireless internet?

The standard installation fee is $249.95 + HST. This fee can vary based on the specific equipment placement needed at your site, which our technicians will determine during the site survey. If additional equipment, like a tower, is needed to enhance signal strength, extra costs will apply. The basic installation fee is waived if you commit to a 2-year service plan, but cancellation within this term will incur charges for the remaining period.

How close to the tower must I be to receive service?

You must be within a 5-10 km radius from the tower with a structure high enough to mount the radio equipment on so that it can receive Storm’s wireless internet service. Height requirements vary depending on location.

Can I connect several computers (or devices) using a single wireless connection?

Yes, you can connect several computers or devices using a single wireless connection by using a router. To get a router you have three options:

You can rent a router from Storm for $9.99+HST/month.
You can purchase a router from Storm by calling 1-866-25-STORM or 613.567.6585 or emailing support@storm.ca.
You can purchase a router from an electronics store. If you decide on this option, Storm can provide technical support to any third-party router.

Are there any additional costs I should be aware of with wireless internet service?

Yes, beyond the monthly service fees, which include the rental cost of the Storm Internet wireless radio at $10/month, there are additional costs to consider. If you require a wireless router, we do not provide one, but we can set up your own router for a $25 + HST fee. For Velocity 250, there is a one-time installation fee of $499.95 + HST. Please note we do not throttle our internet, ensuring you receive consistent speed.

How do I know if I am within range?

Once you fill out an application, our sales team will look at your address using special tools that allow us to gauge how confident we are that you can get service. In order to be 100% sure we will need to visit your location to perform a site survey for a cost of $49.95+HST. This charge will be deducted from your installation fees, should you decide to install within the 12 months following your site survey.

Is wireless internet secure?

Yes, wireless internet is secure when proper precautions are taken. We implement industry-standard encryption and security protocols to protect the data transmitted between your device and our network. To enhance security further, it’s important to use strong, unique passwords for your network and enable any additional security features available on your router. Regular updates and monitoring can also help maintain the security of your wireless internet connection.
